Would you pay for regular home maintenance?
Question by MountainChick: Would you pay for regular home maintenance?
Would you pay for a service, similar to a house cleaning service, that would have a handyman come out to your home on a monthly basis to take care of any minor home repairs and keep up regular maintenance tasks (like cleaning gutters, changing filters, etc.)? This service could be offered when you bought your home to keep it in good shape.
How much would you expect to pay for such a service?

$ 50 a month. The homeowner buys the filters, bulbs, chemicals, etc.
This could also cover regular time trouble calls for things like blown fuses or severely clogged drains for example.
I would think night and weekend emergency trouble calls would be an extra charge.

home remodel?
Question by heretoasku: home remodel?
we are remodeling a home. the kitchen is really small. in order to make it larger we would need to knock a wall out. the problem is the stairs to teh basement are directly behind that wall. we were told we could easily move the basement stairs to another section; this seems crazy to me. can this be done? easily? we were thinking of moving the kitchen all together to a larger room that is not in use and we were told that it would be much harder to do that then to move the steps. what do you think? anyone have any exp moving steps? seems like a lot of work to me.

In my experience, it would be more expensive to relocate a staircase than to remodel a room that is not in use. I would have structural questions, as well, depending on the configuration of the stairwell. Most of the time, we avoid moving stairs just like we avoid moving load bearing walls. If you are already uncomfortable with the suggestion of moving the stairs, I strongly suggest you obtain another opinion or get another contractor or designer to review these plans.

Q&A: How much does a tub improve the value of a home?
Question by lily B: How much does a tub improve the value of a home?
Does anyone have a rough estimate or a way to determine how much having a tub in a home would improve the value of it? We have 2 full baths but they are both just showers, no tub. We want to invest in a tub and are curious what sort of dollar amount of difference this would make.
Best answer:
Answer by Paul in San Diego
Probably about 1 for 1. That is, if you spend $ 1000 to put in a tub, it should increase your value by that much (which really isn’t that much). Most people like to have at least one tub in the house, for women to take a leisurely bath, to wash the dog, for the kids to take a bath, etc. So, it would make the house more saleable moreso than increase the value of the home.

Q&A: Is there a degree in home remodeling or home improvement?
Question by dllego: Is there a degree in home remodeling or home improvement?
I’m in a technical college but I don’t know why yet. I want to work with my hands and with tools so I was thinking about something that has to do with home remodeling. Where you can place new floors and take cabnits down or just re-do a room. So my question is what do I major in. Is there a degree in something like this? I don’t just want to be a construction worker.
