Reader's Digest published two excellent books, how to fix household appliances and how to do things around the house. I forget the actual titles but they should be able to help you.

I have a library of home inprovement books. For my use, not just to collect. There are so many books out there any more that just one book does not really cover the numerous topics that need to be addressed.

I have at least two or three books, some of which are just small brochures, on the trades of; electrical, plumbing, siding and roofing, decks and patios, landscaping, workshop woodworking and metal fabicating, etc. etc.

Some books cover the basics, others get into more detail.

The big box stores Lowes, Home Depot have libraries in them that would be a good place to start. Don't be afraid to spend some time looking through some of them and seriously consider more than just one book to cover all the trades.

In addition to reference books, there are good web sites on line that have some good info on them. I enclosed a few for you to review that I found using the keywords 'home improvement'.

The best one I've found is by Black & Decker, "The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair."

This book has so many pictures (most in color) with clear, concise explanations that it's hard to fail at anything. I've re-stuccoed a part of my home, fixed my air conditioner, done electrical work, replaced bathroom tile, etc., etc., all with the help of this book. You can't beat it!!

You can buy this book used for $ 7.49 on amazon.com. It's large and hard covered and will last for years.

My daughter is 3 and I always try to involve her with what I do around the house. My current project has been to gut her room to the studs and start over.

Of course I could not have her in there while tearing old drywall down and while installing insulation.

She helped me hang the new drywall by handing me the screws while I drive them. She is also good at putting mud in the pan from the bucket. For a 3 year old she sure is helpful. I have always tried to involve her so she can learn.

Someday I will take her with me to work on HVAC systems. I feel it is important to pass down my knowledge.

She even comes out with me in the middle of the winter to feed/water the cows.

Another opinion! I have an old addition of Readers Digest Home Repair Manual which was very good on basic principles of most repairs. The only problem is certain things change as time goes on. (eg: Major appliance repairs have dramaticaly changed with more electronics etc.) Any info is better than none unless your mechanically inclined and enjoy the challenge of going in blind. My brother, who is left handed in an entirely right handed family, couldn't drive a nail with a frieght train until he bought a set of Time Life home repair books at a garage sale. They were the cat's meow for him. Very detailed and written in plain english. He now builds decks, does house wiring, basic plumbing and is no longer afraid to tackle something new. You can also get some good info from a variety of CD roms like one I have from Black & Decker & even Home Depot. My personal favorite is the all knowing "Google Search". Just type in what you want tp know and surf the sites. I resently did this to get a formula for laying out stairs. Great info. Just remember to have fun while you do your home repairs. Saving money, relaxing and enjoying thenewly learned skills are super rewards to the ego and the budget.

The cheapest way is singing along with your favorite songs. You could get lessons.
But either way you can never get worse at doing something.
Unless you have some tragic accident...
But yea...
Just keep at it and you'll do fine.
