I am having my home appraised Thursday. Other than tidying the place up is there anything I can do to help elevate the appraisal? Does an appraiser physically check the house like a home inspector? Do they verify that all appliances are working? Are they climbing on the roof etc? Thanks

No, all they check is sq. footage, number of Bdrms, baths and cosmetic condition. So if you have holes in the wall and water stains on the ceiling or leaking faucets, fix them.

For speed you can use wrist and/or ankle weights while you practice. When you take them off your body will be used to the extra weight and will be faster as a result. But do this sparingly because the weights can be really hard on your joints (i.e. knees).

For accuracy all you need is a piece of rope or an extra karate belt (like the white one that came with your new uniform that you don’t need because you’re no longer a white belt). Take the rope/belt and tie a knot as close to one end as possible then hang the rope/belt so that the knot hangs down (shower curtain rods are great for this and already in most bathrooms); then simply strike the knot; if you miss the knot won’t move but if you hit the knot, the knot should swing cleanly away from you.

We’re planning a bathroom remodel and wondering how much we should be at home for it. Guessing it will take at least a month. Someone “can” work from home most days, but we dont really want too. Although does it make a big difference in workers showing up, asking questions, etc?

Oh lucky you…….this won’t’ be fun!!! I would certainly want to be there in the beginning, really, you need to find out if they are effecient and honest…and even when you are not there I would always leave the suggestion that you may pop in at any time……I had a guy painting the interieor of my last house and was charged by the day…..I was shocked when a neighbor of mine told me that the minute I left he plunked his a** on my couch, cracked a beer and watched t.v…………grrrrrrrrrr……unfortuanately the “job” was almost done by the time they felt they should tell me…..(they could see in my windows……I wasted a ton of money….so that is my opinion…keep an eye on em even if you DO like them!!! JMO

Question by Brad: Which brand of home maintenance material has the logo of a stenciled red devil’s head?
I was in a gas station the other moth, and in the maintenance area, I noticed a unique brand logo on one of the boxes. It was a devil’s head, facing down and looking up. It looked like a graffiti stencil and was very simple. I am not sure if it was paint or tools or what. I am dying to know what this brand is. Please help!

If there is a man around, he may not know how to do these things or even be interested in learning.

Question by djt0704: Code compliance in a home remodel?
My 1947 CA home had a major remodel 10 years ago by the previous owner (added 400 sq ft to the back). My question is, would they have been required to retrofit the foundation on the existing portion up to modern code? I know I can’t assume anything, but what is typically done?

Side question: About how much is it to get a foundation inspection to see how much earthquake retrofit is needed.

You should contact the building inspector for your township/county. Each area goes by different codes. It doesn’t cost you anything for him to come out and look WITH you. (or it shouldn’t) Call and ask, then make an appointment or speak with him/her directly.

Question by country girl1: I want to know if I can claim cost of home remodel on house in one state after moving to another?
We moved from Florida to Tennessee last year. We improved house in florida before selling. We did not live in Florida house for full 24 months so we are being charged capital gains. We were told we could not claim remodeling/repair costs of house in Florida. Also when we moved to TN., after living in it for only a few months,we sold the first home(duplex)we purchased in TN.,to buy a house with a back yard.
We were informed by our tax prep lady the duplex could not be counted or we could not claim the loss on the house in Florida due to Tennessee tax laws.
Why are we unable to claim the cost of remodel on first house in Florida which includes home remodeling and cost of new water well. Can anyone help to clarify the real estate tax laws in state of Tennessee?
